Finding Joy in Simple Traditions: A Holiday Season of Small Wins

Finding Joy in Simple Traditions: A Holiday Season of Small Wins
As Christmas approaches, I’m reflecting on how the holidays are shifting for me. Life looks a lot different than it did a year ago, but I’m discovering that the magic of the season doesn’t have to fade—it just shows up in new ways.

One of the most comforting realizations I’ve had is how meaningful the small, simple traditions are, especially when life feels overwhelming. These tiny moments, the ones we often overlook, have a way of grounding us and bringing unexpected joy. In my book, they're wins.

 The Power of Simple Traditions

The Power of Simple Traditions

As the holidays get hectic, I’m finding peace in focusing on what’s simple and authentic. For me, this means putting a festive essential oil blend like "Christmas Spirit" in the diffuser—it’s healthier for my home, and the warm, nostalgic aroma sets the perfect holiday vibe. I'm also enjoying those crackling fireplace videos on YouTube that play classic Christmas music from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Andy Williams. Nostalgia is especially comforting to me this year.

Another small tradition I’m holding onto is decorating with meaningful items I already have like the handmade ornaments and decorations my kids created when they were little. Rather than chasing "perfection" by buying whatever fancy new stuff is popular each year, I appreciate the nostalgic touch little things bring: stringing popcorn with my grandkids while carols play in the background, watching Rudolph, the Grinch, and Frosty on TV, counting down the days on our Advent calendar... these little traditions remind me that the holidays don’t have to be big or flashy to be beautiful. The simple things are so much more meaningful.

"Material gifts may bring initial excitement, but their novelty often fades quickly. Experiences, on the other hand, create vivid, lasting memories that we revisit and cherish over time."

A Legacy of Memories Over Things

One tradition I’m especially grateful for this year is something Eric and I started years ago: gifting our kids and grandkids experiences instead of things. Whether it was a fly fishing trip to the mountains of Tennessee, a visit to the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium, or touring Hershey's Chocolate World and their Christmas "Sweet Lights", we focused on creating memories together rather than filling the tree with more material things that simply become clutter once the novelty wears off.

Our grandson's 13th birthday gift: fly fishing in Tennessee

Now that Eric is gone, those memories have become absolute treasures. The laughter, the adventures, the shared moments—they mean more than any wrapped gift ever could. I’m even more determined to carry on that tradition now. It’s a way to honor what Eric loved doing and to keep on creating moments that our family will cherish forever.

If you’re looking for a meaningful gift idea, I can’t recommend this enough. Big or small, it's the memories of experiences—whether it’s an afternoon at the park, a visit to a children's museum, or a road trip— that truly stay with us.

Another lesson I’ve learned is that the magic of the holidays doesn’t have to come from grand gestures. It can show up in the smallest of wins. Like finally sitting down with a cup of tea and a good book. Or turning off the endless social media scroll to write in a gratitude journal. Or just taking a deep breath and appreciating the quiet moments after a busy day.

These are the kinds of wins that, when added together, make the season feel lighter and more joyful. They’re what help me navigate the trickier emotions that will inevitably show up during the holidays this year.

Keeping the Spirit of the Season Alive

Keeping the Spirit of the Season Alive

This Christmas, I’m holding tight to these small, intentional moments and the joy they bring. I’m also reminding myself that it’s okay to let go of what no longer fits this season of life—whether it’s skipping a big holiday party or simplifying my decor and holiday baking. The focus, for me, is on family, connection, wellness, and celebrating the small wins that make the season special.

If you’re finding yourself in a similar place—feeling overwhelmed, grieving, or just looking for a simpler way to enjoy the holidays—know that it’s okay to do things differently. Focus on what feels meaningful to you, and don’t be afraid to let go of traditions that no longer serve you.

Whether it’s something as simple as making a healthy swap in the kitchen (a win!) or starting a new family tradition like gifting experiences instead of shopping for gifts, I’d love to hear about it. Let’s inspire each other to focus on the little wins that make this season meaningful to you.
