I've reached the stage of life where I don’t want ‘more’ — I want to be able to put something down without knocking over three other things. That's it. That's the dream.

Why Surrendering Control Might Be the Best Sleep Aid You Haven’t Tried Yet

You know those nights when your brain just refuses to clock out? You’re exhausted, eyes heavy, but your mind’s wide awake running staff meetings about everything from tomorrow’s to-do list to that thing you said in 2014.I’ve started realizing that sometimes, the problem isn’t just the caffeine, or the screens, or even stress. It’s control.Falling asleep is an act of surrender. You can’t plan it, force it, or power through it. You have to let go. And for those of us who like to feel on top of things (hi, fellow control enthusiasts), that can be harder than it sounds.

You’re Not Addicted to Dopamine: How to Boost It Naturally Without Cheap Hits

AJ Flanagan Brain Health, Dopamine, Healthy Habits, Lifestyle Balance, mindset, natural wellness, Sleep & Energy
Ever notice how an hour disappears—scrolling on your phone, munching chips you didn’t even want, or clicking ‘next episode’ on a show you weren’t that into? People often say we’re addicted to dopamine—but that’s a myth. You can’t be addicted to something your brain needs every day. What we really get hooked on are the cheap, quick hits of dopamine—like endless scrolling or junk food—that feel good for a moment but don’t give us the steady motivation dopamine is meant to provide. What’s your version of the ‘cheap hit’? For me lately, it’s YouTube videos. I tell myself just five minutes, and suddenly half an hour’s gone.Learning how to support healthy dopamine levels the right way can help you feel motivated, balanced, and more energized without needing those constant quick fixes...

Let’s be real: I didn’t always read ingredient labels. I didn’t think twice about popping an over-the-counter pill when something hurt. I didn’t really think much at all about a time when healing looked different. But now? I’m asking a lot more questions. And I’m slowly finding my way back to something that feels... simpler. A little slower. A lot more intentional. If you’ve read my post on how petrochemicals changed medicine, you know that the way we do healthcare today didn’t just happen. It was steered, hard, by some very powerful (and very rich) men with profit in mind. And ever since I learned about that shift, I haven’t been able to unsee it...

The Body Keeps Score: How Stress, Grief, and Everyday Habits Show Up in Our Health

We often think of our bodies as separate from our emotions—until they remind us they’re not. Whether it’s stress, grief, or years of go-go-go living, our bodies quietly keep track of everything we don’t deal with. This mind-body connection can show up in subtle but powerful ways. Here’s what I’ve been learning about that unspoken tally...

Weird Until It Works: Why I Started Questioning ‘Normal’

This blog is a bit of a followup on a recent one I wrote about 10 things that I used to think were woo-woo - until they actually worked. All of the comments and emails I got afterwards got me to thinking. Why do we think that stuff is woo-woo in the first place? Remember the movie "White Nights" with Mikhail Baryshnikov,  Gregory Hines, Isabella Rossellini, and Helen Mirren? I used to play that soundtrack over and over and can still remember the lyrics to Lou Reed's song "My Love is Chemical" from it. Their meaning is actually more metaphorical than I understood back then when I took them quite literally...

If you had told me years ago that I’d be sharing about natural wellness products and mentoring others through it, I probably would’ve side-eyed you over my cup of tea.I mean… I didn’t exactly plan on doing this. I just started using a few things from Young Living—swapped out some household cleaners, tried a supplement or two, added oils to my bedtime routine—and realized I felt better. Healthier. More me.

You know those days when you’re overwhelmed, under-caffeinated, and about one dumb comment away from losing it? Yeah. I’ve had some of those lately. And while deep breathing, journaling, and drinking water are technically helpful… sometimes what I really need is to wipe down my counters and cabinets with Thieves Cleaner while listening to some 80s power ballads. Odd? Probably. Helpful? Definitely. So today, I’m sharing a list of 10 weirdly specific things that make me feel better—tiny, random things that bring a little joy, calm, or just make me feel more like myself. Maybe one or two of them will work for you, too. Bonus points if they inspire you to come up with your own little reset rituals.

Stop ‘Shoulding’ on Yourself

Stop ‘Shoulding’ on Yourself

AJ Flanagan Grief and Healing, Healthy Habits, Intentional Wellness, Mindset Shifts, Overcoming Perfectionism, personal growth, Progress Over Perfection, Self-Care Practices, shoulding on yourself, Simplified Living, Small Wins for Wellness
Many of us find ourselves burdened with a never-ending list of "shoulds," such as the need to be more productive or lead a healthier lifestyle. These expectations often originate from society, family, or our inner critic rather than from our genuine desires. By pausing and questioning the source of these "shoulds," we can liberate ourselves from unnecessary pressures and live more authentically.Instead of accepting these societal pressures, we can reframe them to align with our true needs and values. For example, instead of feeling compelled to work out daily, we can choose ways to move our bodies that genuinely feel good. By shifting focus from external expectations to what genuinely serves our well-being, wellness becomes a supportive practice rather than a burden.Challenging the spiral of unrealistic "shoulds" involves recognizing what's genuinely important to us. By asking "Says who?" we can start to dismantle the self-imposed pressures that don't serve us. Ultimately, this shift allows us to pursue a life that feels more authentic and fulfilling, free from the constraints of unnecessary expectations.

✨ My blog exists because I know what it feels like to keep everything jumbled in your head — like a messy pile of clothes you can’t sort through.

Writing it all down brings clarity, calm, and sometimes even healing answers I didn’t know I was looking for.

Honestly, that’s why I keep showing up to write — it helps me make sense of things.

Even if you have no intentions of ever publishing your work, I highly recommend writing stuff down. It doesn't have to be a literary masterpiece or even full, grammatically correct sentences... just dump those random thoughts onto paper... you'll see what I mean.

Hi! I'm AJ Flanagan.

Hi! I'm AJ Flanagan.
I'm endlessly curious about what helps people live healthier, happier, and more intentional lives.

Over the years I've explored everything from cleaner living and better nutrition to habits, grief, stress, relationships, history, and the everyday choices that shape how we live. I'm not interested in chasing perfection or the latest trends. I'm interested in finding what actually works in real life.

Walking alongside my husband, Eric, through two cancer diagnoses changed the way I thought about health, home, and what truly matters. After his passing, that curiosity didn't end—it grew.

Today I write about healthier living, personal growth, and the lessons I'm learning along the way, always hoping something I share helps someone else.

My hope is that this space feels less like a classroom and more like a conversation over coffee—where curiosity replaces pressure, progress matters more than perfection, and together we discover what actually works.

I'm glad you're here and if that sounds like the kind of conversation you'd enjoy, I hope you'll stick around.
