Crying it Out: It's Okay to Not Be Okay

Crying it Out: It's Okay to Not Be Okay
Feeling emotionally overwhelmed has become a constant in my life lately due to significant personal challenges, like navigating my husband's cancer treatments and dealing with the loss of my mom. These experiences have pushed my emotions to the surface, making me realize that tears are a natural and healthy response to stress and change. Acts of kindness, whether from friends or compassionate doctors, often hit me hard and remind me of the good in the world.

I've learned that it's okay not to be okay and that showing vulnerability can build stronger connections with those around me. Emotional release, rather than being a sign of weakness, is essential for healing and provides a moment of respite from daily struggles. Incorporating diffuse essential oils into my self-care routine has been a comforting and grounding practice, helping me to manage my emotions and find strength amidst chaos.

If you're feeling similarly overwhelmed, know that you're not alone. It's perfectly fine to have moments where emotions pour out, and taking the time for self-care can make a world of difference. Embracing our imperfections and connecting with others through shared vulnerability can be incredibly healing.

Finding Growth in the Challenge: How This Experience Is Shaping Me

Finding Growth in the Challenge: How This Experience Is Shaping Me
Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when dealing with multiple challenges simultaneously. Over the past few months, I've faced the grief of losing my mom and the anxiety of supporting my husband, Eric, through his second battle with cancer. Yet, through this period of hardship, I've found solace in a new mantra: "This experience is providing me with plenty of opportunities for personal growth." This perspective has helped me focus on self-improvement and better supporting Eric during his treatments.

One significant area of growth I've identified is improving my communication skills. During stressful times, misunderstandings are common, making it essential to communicate with clarity, compassion, and patience. This experience has taught me the importance of listening actively and being present, even when silence is all that's needed. Embracing this empathetic approach has not only strengthened my connection with Eric but also helped me navigate the complexities of our emotional landscape.

Patience has also been a critical lesson. With test results and treatment schedules often testing my resolve, I've learned to appreciate slow progress and small victories, no matter how insignificant they may seem. Self-care practices such as diffusing essential oils, meditation, and journaling have become indispensable for maintaining my balance and clarity. By embracing vulnerability and seeking support from loved ones, I've discovered that true strength lies in admitting when I need help. Through this journey, I'm continually growing and becoming more resilient, understanding that personal growth is an ongoing process.

*This blog centers the GenX experience, simply because that’s the lens I live through—but anyone looking for connection, natural wellness, grief support, or a little real-talk in this messy stage of life is more than welcome.

Hi! I'm AJ Flanagan.

Hey there! I’m a GenX empty-nester - and recent widow - who had a wake-up call about the hidden toxins in everyday products we used growing up. Our parents didn’t know, and honestly, we were clueless too. But now, I’m all about sharing the details and helping others kick those sneaky chemicals to the curb for a healthier, happier life. 🌿

Life threw us a curveball in 2018 when my amazing husband, Eric, was diagnosed with leukemia. And then a second type of cancer in 2023.  Supporting him through his treatments was challenging, but it also inspired us to make some positive changes. We embraced holistic wellness practices, worked to transform our home into a toxin-free sanctuary, and incorporated relaxation techniques like meditation, music therapy, and aromatherapy into our daily routine.

Caring for and supporting Eric deepened my commitment to living well. From choosing natural products and prioritizing nutritious foods to finding strength in vulnerability, we built a daily routine focused on positivity and wellness.

I’m passionate about sharing our story, the lessons we learned, and the simple steps we took to enhance our overall well-being.

Creating a Nurturing Space Together

We focused on creating a nurturing environment where both of us could thrive. It was a process of resilience, love, and continuous learning that I'm determined to carry forward from here. I’m eager to share our experiences, the lessons we picked up along the way, and the small changes that made a big difference in our lives. Whether you’re looking to make minor adjustments or dive into a complete wellness transformation, I hope our story can inspire and support you on your own path.

Here’s to embracing change, supporting each other, and living our best lives—together! ✨
