Amidst this chaos, finding time for wellness might seem like a daunting task. But fear not! Embracing natural wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it can be as simple as making a few easy shifts in your daily routine and finding a strategy that works for you. Let’s dive into how we can effortlessly incorporate natural wellness practices into our lives for better health and well-being.

Why Go Natural? The GenX Perspective

As GenXers, we grew up in a world that was simpler and less digital. We remember the days of playing outside until the streetlights came on and eating home-cooked meals without a smartphone in sight. This nostalgia for simpler times is fueling a growing interest in holistic health and natural wellness because we remember how good we felt back then - before they started adding all kinds of synthetic chemicals to our food, water, air, personal care products... you name it!

So we’re seeking sustainable, long-term health solutions that avoid harsh chemicals and synthetic products. This shift isn’t just about longing for the past; it’s about integrating that simplicity into our modern wellness routines to achieve a balanced, healthier lifestyle.

Simple Dietary Shifts

Easy Peasy Dietary Changes

Making small changes to our diet can have a big impact on our overall health. Here are some simple, actionable tips to get you started:

Incorporate Whole Foods: Whole, unprocessed foods are packed with nutrients that our bodies crave. Try swapping out processed snacks for fresh fruits, nuts, or vegetables. Stay Hydrated: We’ve all heard it, but it’s worth repeating – drink more water! Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining optimal health. If you struggle to remember, consider using a water intake calculator or app to track your daily water consumption.

Mindful Eating: Slow down and savor your meals. Mindful eating not only helps with digestion but also enhances your overall eating experience. Try a quick mindful eating exercise by focusing on the taste, texture, and aroma of your food during each bite. Chewing more thoroughly also helps our digestion which tends to become less efficient as we get older.

Move It, Don’t Lose It!

Staying active doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym for hours. Here are some fun and natural ways to keep moving:

Incorporate Nature Walks: Walking outdoors is a fantastic way to stay active and connect with nature. Whether it’s a stroll in a local park or a hike on a nearby trail, getting outside can boost your mood and fitness levels.

Stretching and Yoga: Gentle stretching or yoga can do wonders for your body and mind. There are plenty of beginner-friendly yoga videos and apps available to help you get started.

Deskercise: For those who are tied to a desk all day, quick desk exercises can help relieve tension and keep us moving. Simple stretches or movements like shoulder rolls, leg lifts, or seated twists can make a big difference.

Stress Management and Mental Wellness

Managing stress is essential for overall well-being. Here are some natural ways to keep your cool:

Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools for reducing stress and enhancing mental clarity. There are many mindfulness apps and guided meditation videos available to help you start.

Digital Detox: Taking periodic breaks from screens can help reduce stress and improve focus. Try implementing a “tech-free” hour each evening to unwind and recharge. I wrote an entire blog covering why and how to do a digital detox! Read it here

Essential Oils and Aromatherapy: Essential oils like lavender, chamomile, or eucalyptus can have calming effects. Using a diffuser or applying diluted oils to your skin can help you relax and de-stress. Here's my blog about aromatherapy to help you get started!

Embracing natural skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how you can keep it simple:

Use Natural Products: Natural skincare products are often gentler and free from harsh chemicals. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, or shea butter. Steer clear of products listing "fragrance" as an ingredient because, even if it says it's natural, "fragrance" is an umbrella term under which companies can legally hide all sorts of toxic synthetic chemicals. I use good essential oils in place of many products containing fragrance, often adding them to things like my favorite natural cleaner and personal care products. 

DIY Skincare Recipes: Making your own skincare products can be fun and rewarding. Simple recipes like a honey and oatmeal face mask or a sugar and olive oil scrub can be made with ingredients you probably already have at home.

Sun Protection: Natural sun protection is essential. Look for sunscreens that use mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, or try making your own with natural oils like coconut oil or shea butter. Here's my favorite!

Find Your Tribe

Having a supportive community can make a big difference in your wellness journey. Here’s how to build your tribe:

Join Local Wellness Groups: Many communities offer wellness or fitness groups that you can join. Check out local Meetups or community center classes to find like-minded individuals.

Online Wellness Communities: Engage with online forums or social media groups dedicated to wellness. These communities can offer support, motivation, and valuable tips. In fact, I offer one of my own and, if you haven't already joined, I'd love to welcome you in. You'll find it here

Accountability Partners: Having a wellness buddy can keep you motivated and accountable. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or coworker, find someone who shares your wellness goals. Knowing that my friend, Lisa, is expecting me to show up to walk in the mornings keeps me from making lame excuses and flaking out.
